South Greene defeats Rockwood in the 1st Round of the TSSAA Playoffs 20-7

Game Summary By Ed Greif

The Rockwood Tigers playoff run ended Friday night in Greeneville, as they lost to Region 1AA runner-up South Greene 20-7 to finish the season at 5-6 overall and 2-2 in Region 2AA regular season play.

Rockwood took a 7-0 lead with 10:59 left in the second quarter on Dakota Waldo's 1-yard run to cap a 9-play. 49 yard drive. A 33-yard run by Jayden Hannibal, while Waldo carried the ball six times for 11 yards. Ben Woodall booted the PAT.

The Tigers rushed for 53 yards on 11 carries in the first quarter, while South Greene had 19 yards on eight carries in the scoreless first frame.
Corey Houser returned the ensuing kickoff nine yards to the Rebel 24-yard line, where the Rebels open the drive with five straight running plays to pick up 28 yards for two first downs.

Four plays later, quarterback Luke Myers scored from 1-yard out, Jay Higgins booted the PAT to tie the game 7-7. The Tiger offense picked up only 14 yards rushing in the second quarter to finish the half with 67 yards on 18 carries for only three first downs. Nate Brackett was 0-for-3 passing.

The Rebels rushed for 111 yards on 20 carries and 1-of-2 passes for five yards with one interception by Brackett.Leading tacklers for the Tigers were Waldo, Michaiah Story, Gavin Evans, Xadrian Fickey, Brackett, Jack Alexander, Josian Gilbert and Owen Hyle.

Houser returned the second half kick 20 yards to the Rebel 23-yard line and drove the distance in nine plays to take a 13-7 lead with 6:27 left in the quarter.Kieran Hicks carried three times for 42 including a 22-yard run for the score. Higgins' PAT made it 14-7.

Rockwood ran only six plays in the third quarter, netting minus 13 yards rushing on five carries and 0-for-1 passing. Brackett punted once for 38 yards, while South Greene rushed for 99 yards on 15 carries and completed one pass for 9 yards with five first downs.
The Rebels first possession of the fourth quarter ended with a fumble recovery by Evans.

The Tigers' offense got untracked, picking up 30 yards on eight carries. Alexandner, Abe Gaskins, J. Hannibal, Waldo, Brackett and Evans; however, a halfback pass by J. Hannibal was picked off by Jalen Ingram for a 50-yard touchdown for a 20-7 lead with 5;22 lead.
The Tigers' ensuing drive was three and out, while holding the Rebels to a field goal attempt which was no good.

Rockwood took over at their 20-yard line, where Brackett opened the drive with two pass completions - an 8-yarder to Hyle and a 22-yarder to Pudge Hanniball. After a couple of penaties, Brackett tossed three incompletions and was sacked for a 10-yard loss to end their season.

South Greene went into the victory formation to end the game.
